‘Rilascio’, Jeanne Cariati, Alabaster

JEANNE CARIATI
Art has always been an integral part of Jeanne’s life. A former teacher of children with learning differences, she integrated art into her curriculum to enrich her students’ sense of self, see the beauty in the world and in themselves. Connection with the healing arts inspire her work as both poet and sculptor. Her sculpture is widely exhibited throughout Vermont; and she continues to be inspired by her sister co-authors of “PASSAGES in Four Voices” with whom she has written for the past decade.

Artist Statement

STONES SPEAK! The Shona sculptors of Zimbabwe claim that stones speak!  As a stone carver, I believe this to be true.  I listen to the stone and allow it to become what it is meant to be, take it where it wants to go - turn an edge, hollow its center.

I create translucence by working areas of alabaster stone very thin.  The deeper I carve into the stone, the more it portrays its inner beauty.  In the process, the stone is transformed, as am I, the carver.

Sculpting in stone is a metaphor for me to live intuitively without certainty or expectation,  to be attentive to what is in front of me, to create in abandon.  Therein lies the joy.
