Emily Lowe

Starlight penetrates the Earth and a hidden gem is unveiled, Emily Lowe, Medium: gouache and colored pencil on paper, 8x10, framed, March 2020

EMILY LOWE was born and raised in midcoast Maine where her imagination was shaped by countless hours exploring the granite shore near her home in Owls Head. She graduated from Maine College of Art in 2000 with a BFA in Photography and continues to live and work in Rockland, Maine. Shortly after college her love for nature led her out of the darkroom and into the world of gardening, partly inspired by early memories of hiking and gardening with her Grandmother. While traveling and working on farms in northern California, Emily was introduced to Biodynamics and the work of Rudolf Steiner — an experience which opened her eyes to the relationship between soil, plants, and the cosmos, and left a deep impression in her heart. Upon returning to Maine this passion steered her toward a position as the head gardener at Primo Restaurant for five years where she oversaw the cultivation of extensive vegetable and flower gardens and raised chickens, pigs, and bees. This experience eventually led Emily to running her own gourmet vegetable operation, Birdsong Farm, that catered to local restaurants.

In 2012 Emily began studying with The Unseen Hand and simultaneously stepped into a position working for her family business. Over the course of nine years of work in almost every facet of Lowe Hardware, her preference was for the hands-on nature of fine metal finishing and antiquing processes. During her time as a student of The Unseen Hand and under the tutelage of her teacher Laura Stelmok, Emily’s relationship to creating and making art was rekindled — in 2018 she began to draw, paint, and make photographs again. Her time inside the school and the tradition in which it is rooted, has facilitated the growth of an inner life, and a relationship to both herself and the Divine which has been awakening little by little; not unlike the way a seed swells, sprouts and grows from the soil. In the spring of 2021 Emily left the family business to pursue a new path, one which will allow her to devote more time and energy to her creative process.

Artist Statement

I am fascinated by the relationship between the microcosm and the macrocosm. I find inspiration and solace in the places where forests meet the sea, where the tides fill and recede, and where the smallest particles of life are echoed within the vast expanse of ocean and cosmos. There resides in me a deeply rooted passion and love for the cycles of creation and manifestation, for the processes of life: dormancy, germination, unfurling, ripening, death, and decomposition. I am interested in discovering and revealing the places and moments where this hidden spark of life becomes visible — where wonder and awe stop me in my tracks. I believe that art is a gift from the Earth with a Divine purpose and that one of the functions of the artist is to give this gift back to the Earth and humanity in this time of unprecedented planetary and spiritual crisis.
